News of the American businessman's success in the US election received mixed responses from world leaders..and the Isle of Lewis.

Calum Murray, Donald Trump’s Sottish cousin, quickly congratulated his far-flung relative for becoming the Leader of the Free World but urged him not to return to the Hebridean isle.

Murray, 69, is worried that if Trump returns to the island the residents might not be able to cope with all the attention.

Murray told newspapers that much has changed since Trump’s first visit to his ancestral home eight years ago.

He said: “It’s been a journey - we are very happy and very proud of him.

“But I don’t know if it would be possible for him to come back.

“It was different then - the island couldn’t cope with it now.”

The President-elect’s mother Mary was born in Lewis before emigrating to the US.

Speaking from the family home in Tong another cousin Alasdair Murray told The Sun: “ Of course everyone here is happy for him.

“We are just waiting for it to sink in a bit.”

Yesterday, at the end of one of the most divisive elections in modern US history, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in a race that went down to the wire.

The star of the US version of The Apprentice last visited the Scottish branch of his family tree in 2008 where he remarked: “I feel very comfortable here - I think I do feel Scottish.”

The tycoon has a property portfolio in Scotland comprising of Trump Turnberry, Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire, and DT Connect Europe, a helicopter operations firm.
