Teacher Sarah Corrieri explained how her P1C pupils’ book Fun Fairytales came about.

She said: “We are doing a topic called Fairyland.

“They all wrote fairytales and developed their own characters. Then one of them said we could do our own book. And that’s what we have done.

“It’s basically a collection of the fairytales that they have put together.

“It has all come from the pupils. They wrote their stories in little groups of four.

“They came up with their plots and decided whether their characters were good or bad. They did all of the illustrations as well. There was a lot of planning about description – like how do you know just by a picture if it’s a good or bad character?”

Mrs Corrieri revealed how quickly the book was put together: “They are all so proud of it. They think they are going to be famous.

“They are just short stories, looking at the structure of beginning, middle and end. We had been learning about fairytales in February and March, but the book was done in a week.

“They developed their characters on the Monday and the book was published by Friday. They just decided on the Friday morning to take it home so they had it for bedtime stories. Bearing in mind it’s a half day, so it was very busy!

“Each of them got a copy to take home to their parents.

“We are very big in celebrating their achievements and having high expectations, so I couldn’t be prouder. They are wee superstars, honestly. They have completely excelled themselves.”
