1966

ROSEWELL: The sound of children at play echoes daily round the grounds of the Margaret Sinclair Centre at Rosewell. They are taking part in a scheme inaugurated by Father Denis O’Connell to provide Rosewell children with something constructive to do. About 40 children, aged from 10 to 15, are involved in the project. They are helping to landscape the grounds of the centre and to do repainting work. Already about 600 rose buses have been planted in the grounds and the main drive is flanked with cherry trees. At the centre, the children mix work with play and in one of the cloisters there is a row of cages where pets are kept.

1991

LOANHEAD: Plans for a housing development on the former grounds of Dryden Bank, Loanhead, were quashed by Midlothian District Council’s planning committee last week. The site in Polton Road, which hosts the remains of Dryden Bank which was demolished at the end of the 19th century, have been used for agricultural and horticultural purposes in the past. Among the reasons for refusal were poor sightlines and an adverse impact on the amenity of an adjoining house.

2006

PENICUIK: Penicuik has been stunned by the news that the world-renowned Edinburgh Crystal Glass Company is calling in the administrators - raising fears that as many as 120 jobs could go in the town. The prestigious glassware firm, which has been based at Penicuik since 1969, saw Caledonia Investments lead a buy-out in 1990 with the support of the senior management team and Thomas Webb and Sons. Local MSP Christine Grahame has called on Scottish Ministers to despatch an economic task force to Penicuik and has written to the Enterprise Minister warning of the damage that would be caused to the local economy if ministers fail to act.
