Schools use sports to bring relief to world’s poorest

Schools across Edinburgh and the Lothians are preparing to get active and raise cash for Sport Relief.

Youngsters of all ages will take part in a range of sports on March 23 to help some of the world’s poorest people.

Craigmount High is planning a 12-hour ‘sport-a-thon’ with pupils getting involved in five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, badminton and short tennis. The school is also hosting a mini-carnival with various stalls.

At Redhall Primary in Longstone, students, teachers and parents will be running, hopping, skipping and jumping the whole distance of a marathon, by completing a set number of metres each.

And thanks to a campaign by Sport Relief and the Evening News, grassroots organisations are to benefit from a £50,000 cash fund. Grants of £500 to £1000 are being distributed to small groups in the Lothians which are working to help people living tough lives.
