Osian Linton, 21, attacked the nurse after she fell asleep in his student flat, in Dewer Street, following a drinking session in the city.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been sick previously that evening and agreed to go back to Linton’s flat instead of going home as he had a spare bed.

But she woke around 2am to find Linton assaulting her and begged him to stop.

She managed to escape Linton – a fourth-year Physics student at the University of Edinburgh – and got a taxi home.

She called the police and Linton was arrested and charged after DNA was found on him. The court heard he had apologised for the attack before the woman left his home, on June 4, 2015.

Linton was told by a sheriff yesterday that he “could still present a significant risk to women in the future”. He was placed on a three-year offenders supervision requirement and on the sex offenders register, also for the next three years.
