Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where medical staff have described her condition as critical.

Officers have issued an appeal to find out more about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

On Saturday, March 6, Edinburgh City Council road officials introduced new traffic arrangements on Silverknowes Road North, which introduced one bus lane and one cycle-way, following the closure of the road to traffic last year under the Spaces for People Scheme.

However, some drivers ignored signage stating the single lane road was now for buses only and started driving in from both ends shortly after it opened.

Police were forced to attend within hours because of the dangers and the road had to be closed again later that night.

Almond Liberal Democrat councillor, Kevin Lang, said on Thursday: "Obviously this is a deeply concerning incident and I really hope the cyclist involved makes a full recovery.

"It would be deeply concerning to me if the arrangement down at Silverknowes Road - which was supposed to be there to protect cyclists - if those arrangements were in any way a cause of this terrible accident.

"It's going to be important to fully investigate the cause of this and if there are changes that need to be made to the cycle lanes there, it's important that the council make them as soon as possible."
