Sir Menzies heads up Lib Dem plans for home rule

Former UK Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell is to chair a new commission to develop a blueprint for home rule in Scotland.

The party’s Scottish conference last month voted for a commission to look at a settled distribution of powers between London, Edinburgh and local councils.

Among those to serve with Sir Menzies will be former Edinburgh Lib Dem councillor Fred Mackintosh, and Birlinn Books managing director Hugh Andrew. Announcing the commission, Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie said: “Liberal Democrats are ambitious for Scotland’s people and, with home rule in the United Kingdom, we can look to shape our own future whilst sharing risk, security and international relations in an uncertain world.”

Sir Menzies said: “Continuing partnership within the United Kingdom, and consistent with that relationship, increased responsibility for our own domestic affairs, is the clearest way forward.”
