PAPER train tickets are set to be a thing of the past after new firm Abellio takes over operation of ScotRail in April.

One in eight passengers would use a top up “smartcard” for their journey by 2016, one in three by the next year and two in three by 2020, according to Abellio project manager John Dietz.

The cards, which were launched five years ago, are currently only used for two per cent of trips. The Dutch operator will also encourage more cycling to and from stations with a staffed cycle storage area and bike workshop planned for Waverley Station.
