Sturgeon ‘commits’ to two major city hospital projects

HEALTH chiefs have offered the strongest commitment yet that two major hospital projects will go ahead in the Lothians.

Nicola Sturgeon, the health secretary, said millions of pounds has been committed to both the East Lothian Community Hospital and the rebuilding of the Royal Edinburgh psychiatric facility in Morningside.

Those projects have been long-awaited, and both are subject to speculation that they might be scrapped altogether amid financial cutbacks.

However, revealing the funding – which will be delivered through the hub initiative – Ms Sturgeon said they would definitely go ahead.

She said: “This significant investment clearly sets out the strength of our commitment to the NHS in Scotland and will mean that we can provide more sustainable, high quality and continually improving care services close to home.”
