Teen boys charged after Midlothian police seize electric bikes amid anti-social behaviour crackdown

Midlothian police said they are responding to residents’ concerns about increasing anti-social behaviour

Two teenage boys have been charged after allegedly riding electric Surron bikes dangerously in Bonnyrigg.

A pair of bikes were seized on Wednesday evening by Midlothian police, who reported a “significant increase” in such incidents.

They said officers are aware of the growing problem regarding electric bikes and related anti-social behaviour and had increased efforts to tackle it.

They said two boys have been charged with “multiple” road offences in connection with the incident in Bonnyrigg.

Sergeant Brownlee said "We are very aware of the significant increase in the use of these types of vehicles and the associated anti-social behaviour issues that come with it.

“We are also extremely mindful of the local communities concerns, which we too share and I'd like to reassure the public my team are doing lots to try and tackle this problem as evidenced in this result.

“I would like to remind anyone who owns a vehicle of this nature, they are not to be driven on roads or public spaces as this is illegal and police will lawfully seize the vehicles.”

He encouraged anyone who wishes to report an incident to contact police via 101.

“With the help of our residents in Midlothian, I am confident we will continue to see results like this for our county,” he added.

“The public’s safety is of the highest importance to us and we want your public areas to be free from these issues.”
