Teen who raped and killed OAP loses appeal

A TEENAGER who raped and killed a frail pensioner who treated him “like a grandson” has failed to have his sentence cut.

Jay Soso, 18, was jailed in August for killing Marie Reid, 63, in her home at Easter Drylaw Way in November 2010.

Soso, a prisoner of HMP Saughton, was convicted of rape and culpable homicide by judge Lady Dorrian at the High Court in Edinburgh.

He was ordered to serve at least 12 years and eight months and was told that he would be kept under supervision for at least five years following his release.

Soso’s legal team yesterday told the Court of Criminal Appeal that the jail term was excessive.

But judges Lord Clarke and Lord Wheatley disagreed – and said that their colleague Lady Dorrian acted correctly.

Soso, originally of Home Street, Tollcross, pleaded guilty to rape and culpable homicide earlier this year.

During the hearing, the court heard that the widow was found four days after the fatal attack at her sheltered flat.

Soso had met his victim’s son and offered his condolences over the death.

Lord Clarke and Lord Wheatley said Soso had committed a “serious” offence and that the sentence reflected the nature of the crime.
