The group of four boys aged around 14 were opening a window on the 2:51 Edinburgh to Helensburgh train on Saturday allowing snow to enter the carriage, when the 24-year-old victim closed it.

The man was verbally abused and then punched in the face by one of the group.

The man left the train at Blairhill, and was attacked again as he got off.

Det Con Andrew Egan said: “The assault on the victim appears to have been completely random and I am aware that there were other passengers in the same carriage who would have witnessed it. I am anxious to speak with anyone who was on the train or at the stations.”

Two of the boys are slim. One had short blonde hair, crooked teeth and was wearing a black hooded top and blue jeans, while the other had short dark hair.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the train and stations in a bid to find those responsible.

The victim suffered swelling and a small cut to his face after the attack believed to be unprovoked.
