This year's fair is streets ahead

Local people turned out in big numbers on Saturday for the annual Penicuik Street Fair held in the town centre, with over 40 stalls selling their wares at the event which has now been held for more than 30 years.

Mose Hutchison of Penicuik and District Community Council, the group that organises the street fair, was delighted with how the day turned out, particularly regarding the weather.

He said: “It was great, there was a couple of spots in the air but the weather was good on the whole which makes a difference.

“The day on the whole was tremendous, there must have been over 1000 people in the precinct which is just brilliant. I would say the numbers were up on previous years.”

As well as the stalls, those who flocked to the town centre were entertained by Penicuik Silver Band and Dance Pointe Academy Penicuik.

The event was opened by the Penicuik Hunter and Lass, joined for the first time by the junior Hunter and Lass also.

Mose said: “You have got to give them centre stage, it’s great to have the youngsters involved, and they enjoyed it.”

He added: “We had lots happening, with a children’s roundabout, stilt walker and Crystal FM were broadcasting live from the street fair too.

“We also had a presentation for best stall which was won by Mrs Jackie Keith who was raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“There were lots of different stalls, selling books, flowers, homemade jam. There were also stalls from the local rotary club, masonic lodge and the political parties, all sorts of stalls for everyone.

“I have got to thank Midlothian Council for setting it all up, they have us the stage and PA system, as well as tables and chairs. They did us proud and we couldn’t have done it without them.”
