Three kayakers struggling 500 metres out in rough seas escorted back to East Lothian shore by rescue teams

Three kayakers have been escorted back to shore by rescue teams today after getting into difficulty about 500 metres out at sea.

Queensferry Lifeboat were joined by local coastguard teams and paramedics in the rescue operation launched from Cockenzie and Port Seton this afternoon.

A coastguard spokeswoman said: "The kayakers managed to get back to shore on their own but they were assisted by the coastguard team with their weather rescue skills. The casualties were assisted by ambulance staff and everyone is safe and well and all equipment has been retrieved."

The spokeswoman confirmed they were about 500 metres out from the shore in a "difficult sea state" when rescue teams were alerted.

It comes during a spell of stormy weather across Scotland which has brought heavy rain and high winds.
