Thug batters woman with pole in thwarted attack

A CITY businesswoman was battered about the head with a wooden pole during a vicious attempted daylight robbery.

The 43-year-old had been walking home from work along South Trinity Road when a man, who had earlier been spotted rummaging through bins, approached from behind and struck her over the head with a pole.

The thug made a grab for her bag before being scared off by passers-by who came to her aid. She was left with bruising and swelling to the back of her head following the incident at 5.45pm on Tuesday.

DC Sarah Hamilton, who is investigating the incident, said the attack has left the woman “very frightened” and “shaken up”.

“She is still quite tearful when talking about it,” she said. “I imagine it will take time for her to be confident enough to walk the same route home again.”

DC Hamilton said the woman, described as a “successful businesswoman” had seen her attacker going through bins at Goldenacre Pharmacy before she was targeted.

“She’s crossed over to the opposite pavement and at this point has felt a blinding pain in the back of her head and realised what was going on.”

The wooden pole possibly used in the attack had a white plastic bag tied around the top.

DC Hamilton said: “This is clearly an aggressive male who’s carrying out a vicious attack on a lone woman.”

The suspect is described as white, mid 30s to early 40s, 5ft 8ins tall with a medium to stocky build, short dark greying hair and a clean-shaven complexion. He was wearing a dark jacket, jeans, trainers and dark-rimmed glasses.
