Timelapse video shows Ross Fountain deconstruction

A timelapse video has shown the painstaking work undergone to restore the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens.

The 19th-century fountain was removed this year after falling into such a state of disrepair that it was in danger of teetering over or collapsing completely.

Work to remove the statue got underway in June, and footage has emerged from the Ross Development Trust showing the work that was undertaken to carefully remove the much-loved fountain.

The fountain, which has been out of action since 2010, is also said to have suffered serious damage due to “substantial water loss” through its structure.

A team of engineers spent two months deconstructing the fountain, piece by piece, before taking the 120 pieces to their workshop for restoring.

The video also highlights the excavation work carried out in the area surrounding the fountain to flatten out and provide a safer platform for the fountain before it is rebuilt on the same site.

An underground chamber” is to be built for the new-look fountain which will allow the water to be recycled when it is switched back on next spring.

Work to rebuild the fountain is due to get underway in 2018, with the aim of fully restoring the iconic fountain by the summer.
