Air levy cuts '˜will help the wealthy rather than the poor'
The SNP's plan to slash Air Passenger Duty will benefit the wealthy rather than low-income families, transport campaigners have said.
In written evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s finance committee, Transform Scotland also claimed the move to halve APD would attract new air passengers but mainly people switching from rail.
It said: “People on higher incomes fly far more frequently than people on lower incomes - 70per cent of all flights in the UK are taken by the wealthiest 15 per cent of the population. So a reduction in ADT would financially benefit frequent flyers on higher incomes far more than those on low incomes who typically fly less or not all.”
Labour’s Neil Bibby said: “This lays bare just how wrong-headed the SNP are on APD. Their plan won’t make Scotland any fairer or greener.”
