Trams set to miss end of year target

TRAM bosses faced new questions today over whether the project was still on track after they said the road closure in St Andrew Square would not be lifted at the end of the month as scheduled.

Andrew Square would not be lifted at the end of the month as scheduled.

Contractors have been making good progress in laying the tram tracks and carrying out other work in the square in recent weeks.

The target programme for tram construction, published by the council, says both the road closure and traffic management in St Andrew Square are due to finish by “Quarter 4, 2012” – the end of this month.

But the council yesterday admitted the deadline would not be met, and described the target date as “misleading”. It insisted, however, the project remained on schedule.

A council spokeswoman said: “Pedestrian access has been improved all around the square in time for the festive season.”
