Edinburgh West Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine asked for an inspection of the site after residents expressed concern about the poor state of works being carried out by CityFibre.

They said signs were blocking the temporary traffic lights so motorists could not see them properly, there were cones in the road, debris all over the grass and pavement and fences were stacked up, ruining the grass and falling into the road.

After Ms Jardine’s intervention, the council confirmed work would be halted until it met the required standards and there were no hazards for residents.

Ms Jardine said: “I’m relieved that residents have been listened to and that works were paused until the site was made safe and compliant with the council’s standards.

“The council has assured me that the situation will be monitored closely and that no works will take place if there is any doubt about safety.”
