Trams plan alive and well on the road to airport

THE first day of testing on the Capital’s tram system has been declared a success after overhead power lines went live for the first time.

The switch was flicked on lines stretching across 1.7 miles of track from the main Gogar depot to Edinburgh Airport. Ahead of the start of the testing period yesterday, Edinburgh City Council fired a safety warning, urging residents to steer clear of the active 750V cables.

Lothian and Borders Police said they had received no reports of anyone being injured along the stretch of track. The first trams are expected to start testing the track within two to three weeks. Transport convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “These tests are a vital part of the development of Edinburgh’s trams system.”
