Police in West Lothian have issued a stark warning to drivers in the region, after a night of heavy snowfall in places.

Posting on social media, West Lothian police told followers: “Folks, please drive with extreme caution this morning, it's very icy under the snow.

“We are already seeing some difficulties on the roads in the Bathgate hills.

“Leave plenty of time to de-ice your vehicle and for your journey.

“Stay Safe,” the message finished.

The warning came as photos from Armadale, West Lothian, showed long queues on roads blanketed with snow.

Meanwhile, on South Street in the town, the driver of a white Nissan Juke skidded in the icy conditions and was left facing at right angles to the carriageway.

A photo shared by police on Twitter showed the aftermath of a traffic incident outside the Simpson Library in Bathgate.
