Tributes as brave teenager Leon Rendle loses cancer fight

A TEENAGER who touched the hearts of thousands with his brave fight against rare bone cancer has died.

Leon Rendle, 16, of Lochend, is understood to have passed away early today, almost three years after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma.

His fight, which involved rounds of chemotherapy, surgery and a stem cell transplant, was so inspiring he was picked to carry a torch at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Despite a period of remission, the cancer persisted and his condition deteriorated in recent months.

Family members have taken to social media to share their heartbreak with friends, who described the youngster as an “angel” and a “brave young man”.

On his update page, named ‘Leon’s Light’, they wrote: “Hey everyone. We’re heartbroken writing this.

“Our gorgeous boy Leon passed away peacefully and gained his angel wings at 00:33am this morning.”

Hundreds of people posted their respects to the teen, who was awarded a Little Star Award for his determined battle against the disease.

Despite his ongoing battle, over the past few months his family have managed to arrange for him to fulfil many of his dreams.

This included meeting the Manchester United football squad, especially his favourite player Wayne Rooney, and going on holiday to Paris and Normandy.
