Dominic Cummings helped fix my washine machine – Hayley Matthews

Inspired by Dominic Cummings’ eye-sight-testing drive during lockdown, Hayley Matthews decides to stop hand-washing and get someone to repair her machine.

They say it comes in threes don’t they?

Well, first we had a flat battery on the car when we tried to start it after a few months of lockdown.

Then there was a water incident with the laptop as baby Oryn smacked a cup of water – spraying the table and computer (I’m actually writing this on my phone – oh the glam) and then the dreaded washing machine stopped filling itself with water, started throwing up error codes and went on strike. Thinking my suggestion of calling up the washing machine repair company to come out and fix would be gasped at, I tried to make do.

But to be honest, the laptop and car I can do without but the washing machine? Not a chance. With a family of four humans and four cats there’s always a load waiting. And just as I think I’ve gotten on top of the hand washing a cat spews up a hair ball followed by a few blades of grass. This time that fur ball was chucked up into the last clean pile of washing.

Still not wanting to bother anyone in the middle of a pandemic I started filling up the washing machine with water myself from a five-litre plastic water bottle that had gone a nice shade of opaque.

That got us through for a bit but I was still very reluctant to call on the warranty as everyone seemed to be scared to walk past each other never mind fix a washing machine. Then the sun came out and Dominic Cummings made it OK to go and get an ‘eye test’ miles and miles away so I thought what the hell am I doing, called up the repair company and had a working washing machine a week later.

I’m not quite sure who to thank – but don’t struggle in silence if you’re hand washing your smalls in the bath, get your machine fixed.
