Watch as lifeboat crews in North Berwick scramble to rescue dog owner and pet from choppy sea

Video footage has captured the moment lifeboat volunteers in North Berwick braved choppy seas to rescue a dog owner and her pet from the water.

RNLI volunteers in North Berwick were alerted to two people and a dog in difficulty at Seacliff Beach on Saturday, February 7. The dog, a three-year-old Weimaraner had tried to jump on the harbour wall, slipped and plummeted four metres into the water below.

His owner had then climbed down a ladder and entered the sea in an attempt to rescue her pet, with a passerby also having gone into the water to assist.

Volunteers from North Berwick RNLI arrived on the scene 11 minutes later and, after assessing the difficult sea conditions, made the decision to carry out a beach landing at Seacliff Beach and make their way to the scene on foot.

On arrival at the beach, they learned that members of the North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team were on the scene and had pulled the two people from the water. It was also confirmed that a member of the team had their hands on the dog, but that she was still in the water.

The video footage shows the teams’ efforts to save the dog from the water, which is covered in sea foam.

Lifeboat volunteers provided care to the dog walker and passerby, who were cold but unharmed, and also helped rescue the dog from the water using an animal rescue bag. None of the casualties required any further treatment.
