The volunteer crew was called out at 12.15pm on Sunday following a report of a stand-up paddle boarder in difficulty off Portobello beach – but it then found another person also in trouble.

Crew member Megan Davidson said: “We arrived to find the two casualties around half-a-mile off Portobello beach. A female on a SUP (stand-up paddle) board was struggling in the conditions due to an offshore wind and choppy conditions.

“Meanwhile, a second person had used a kayak to offer assistance but had capsized and was also suffering from a medical issue. We managed to get both casualties into the lifeboat where we took them to Portobello beach to await an ambulance.

“Both casualties were assessed using the RNLI’s casualty care system before they were handed over to an ambulance crew. The male kayaker was taken to

hospital for further treatment.”
