Edinburgh weather set to turn wintery with possible snow showers later this week

Edinburgh residents are being warned that the weather is set to take a wintry turn later this week with possible sleet showers hitting the city.

The Met Office has said that a “brief cooler spell” is set to sweep the country later this week, bringing colder temperatures and more unsettled weather from Thursday onwards.

According to the latest forecast, Edinburgh is set to be hit with a 70 per cent chance of sleet showers on Friday morning (March 13) between 4am and 9am.

Snow is expected to hit other parts of the country, particularly in the north of Scotland, with the possibility of flurries further south.

Oli Clayton, from the Met Office, said: “Elsewhere, we might see some falling snow further south, in some parts of Wales and higher ground of northern England, but it’s unlikely to settle around those northern areas.

“They are snow showers – it’s not a widespread front of snow, so not everywhere will see the same level of accumulations.”

He added that the temperature will feel colder throughout the weekend before becoming milder and closer to spring averages.

Temperatures on Thursday will dip to a low of 1ºC and highs of 10ºC, while Friday will see temperatures strech from 2ºC to 7ºC.

Mr Clayton said: “As we go through Sunday, there’s potential for some more unsettled weather, probably introducing temperatures closer to average for that time of year as we sort of move towards the end of the weekend and into next week.”

It comes as the Met Office also introduced a yellow weather warning for north-western coast of Scotland for wind. The warning is in place from midnight on Wednesday, March 11 until 12pm the same day.
