Edinburgh could reach 26c on Sunday and ‘threaten hottest temperature of the year’ - Met office

Edinburgh could reach 26c on Sunday and threaten to break the current record for the highest temperature of the year in Scotland.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates said a combination of strong sunshine, warm air from the south west and high pressure could mean the mercury will reach a point somewhere between 25c and 26c in the Capital.

The maximum recorded temperature of the year so far in Scotland was 25.6c on June 2 at Prestwick.

Mr Keates said: “The eastern board, all the way up to Aberdeen, will be threatening the highest temperature of the year. For Edinburgh 25c is a good bet or slightly higher but it could reach 26c. There is a chance.”

Temperatures could reach between 25c and 26c in Edinburgh on Sunday.

He said the warmest part of the day for Edinburgh is likely to be between late morning and 2pm and that there will be sunshine for most of the day, although by late evening it will be “a little more hazy” as it clouds over.

Mr Keates said Edinburgh will also be quite breezy on Sunday which might help keep people refreshed during the day.

He said there will be contrasting temperatures between eastern and western Scotland on, with Edinburgh and Aberdeen expected to be among the warmest locations. In the north west, high temperatures are expected to be in the mid teens in some places.

On Monday, the Capital is forecast to be much cooler with maximum temperatures of mid to high teens expected for most of next week.
