Hundreds of thousands of people will take to Edinburgh’s streets on Tuesday (31 Dec) for the city’s annual Hogmanay celebrations. If you’re attending the street party, it’s important to dress for the weather. Here’s what to expect, according to the Met Office.

New Year’s Eve (Tue 31 Dec)

Hogmanay will begin cloudy and cool in Edinburgh, according to the Met Office’s current predictions, with a temperature of 4C (feels like 1C) at 9am. Wind gusts should reach around 15 mph.

The chance of rain remains low throughout the day, at 10 per cent.

By the time doors open for the street party at 7:30pm, skies will still be overcast, but temperatures will have warmed up a little, reaching 5C (but still feeling around 1C or 2C). Conditions may feel a little windy, as gusts hit 21 mph at around 9pm.

New Year’s Day (Wed 1 Jan)

The weather will remain cloudy but dry as we reach midnight and move into 2020. Wind speeds will remain high, though, perhaps making conditions feel cooler than the expected 6C or 7C temperature.

What to wear to the street party

It is advisable to wrap up warm for the street party, as the entire evening takes place outdoors. Temperatures are expected to be relatively low, and wind gusts could make you feel even colder.

Although rain is not currently forecast, Scotland’s weather is notoriously changeable. It would be wise to have a waterproof jacket with you, as well as sensible footwear.
