Temperatures are predicted to reach 22c in Edinburgh on Tuesday as the mercury soars above the mid September average.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Luke Miall says Glasgow, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders will likely see the highest temperatures at 23c.

He said most parts of Scotland will reach the high teens and low 20s on Tuesday - other than in the Western and Northern Isles where some cloud and rain is expected.

Mr Miall said temperatures will likely peak at 22c in Edinburgh.

He said the average maximum temperature in Scotland for mid September is 16-17c, adding: “Most places will be above average.

“High pressure to the south-east of the UK and, as the winds go clockwise, air is dragged in from the south-east which is always a warm direction for the UK.”

Mr Miall added that sunshine is expected widely across Scotland too which will contribute towards these higher than average temperatures.
