Edinburgh weather: Temperatures set to soar for rest of the week in mini heatwave

After a spell of rainfall, summer is set to return to Edinburgh with rising temperatures this week.

Wednesday is expected to see temperatures rise to a high of 24 degrees with sunny intervals throughout the day and a gentle breeze and the warm weather will continue into Thursday.

Temperatures will remain high into Friday, with it expected to remain at 24 degrees, however there is a chance of thundery showers happening throughout the day.

The weekend will take a cooler turn with temperatures of 17 degrees predicted on both days and rain throughout Saturday, however Sunday looks to be a bit brighter and drier with some clouds.

Met Office meteorologist Emma Salter said temperatures will "build day on day" across the UK and by Wednesday the mercury is set to hit 30C in southern England.

Last weekend many hoped for beer garden weather after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon eased lockdown measures in Scotland into phase two, but the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms as heavy showers developed across the Central Belt.

The month of May has become the sunniest calendar month on record in Scotland, with some counties in eastern Scotland also having recorded their driest spring in a rainfall series from 1862 but the weather turned to more typical Scottish weather earlier this month as downpours have hit.
