Edinburgh weather: Thunderstorm warning covering most of UK in place for the whole of Wednesday

The Capital is bracing itself for potential floods, lightning strikes and strong winds.

Thunderstorms, lightning and flood risks will hit Edinburgh on Wednesday as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning.

The Capital is bracing itself as warnings of travel disruption and potential building damage due to lightning strikes are predicted.

Edinburgh is likely to be hit early in the morning, and the Met Office have warned that the storms will be ‘intense’.

The Met Office have also warned that there is a chance that homes and buildings could have flood damage and have advised people not to travel in case of delays or road closures.

There is also a chance of power cuts, and a small chance of fast flowing or deep flood water causing danger to life.

A statement from the Met Office said: “Whilst many parts will see a good deal of dry weather, areas of thunderstorms are likely to develop over parts of the UK or nearby continent, and will generally track north or north-westwards, potentially affecting many parts of the UK at some point.

“Eastern Scotland looks most at risk during the early hours of Wednesday, then southern parts of the UK see the risk increasing later in the day.

“Where the storms occur, it will be intense.

“Rainfall totals of 30-40 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 60-80 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.

“Large hail, frequent lightning and gusty winds will be additional hazards.”
