Forecasters predict that ice is likely to develop as a result of snow that fell yesterday, Sunday, melting and more rain falling overnight.

The yellow warning is in place until 11am this morning, Monday, January 4, and warns that icy patches may cause tricky travel conditions.

A statement on the Met Office website says: “Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.

"Further hill snow is also possible above 200-300m, though less extensively than last night.”

Police Scotland have warned drivers to take care across the country as the icy weather makes for difficult driving conditions.

They added that “several collisions” have already been reported today as a result of the bad weather.

A tweet from Police Scotland Control Rooms this morning said: “Difficult driving conditions in most areas. Freezing conditions following sleet/rain/snow overnight.

"Already several collisions reported. If you need to drive then give yourself extra time, slow down & check our website for advice before heading off.”

While rain is forecast today and possibly into tomorrow morning, the rest of the week looks to remain dry but cloudy across the capital.

There is still a chance of snow as temperatures remain low during the week but as the weekend approaches the Met Office predict that temperatures will rise to four or five degrees.
