Storm Darcy: Giant chunks of ice form under ScotRail trains after temperatures plummet

Huge clumps of ice have formed underneath trains in Scotland as temperatures across the country reached record lows.

ScotRail has shared an image of one train’s underneath covered in chunks of ice that have built up in the wintry conditions.

Staff said they will have to use “enormous” heaters to melt the ice before the train can resume service.

The photo was shared on ScotRail’s Twitter page with a caption reading: “Huge blocks of ice can form underneath our trains are they travel through snow.

"Here's one of our Inter7City high-speed trains back at the depot last night.

"We'll use enormous heaters to melt the ice, but it can take hours."

Temperatures plummeted last night across parts of Scotland with Braemar in Aberdeenshire recording minus 22.9C (minus 9.2F), the coldest temperature since 1995 according to the Met Office.

The UK record low is -27.2C and was recorded in this area of Scotland in 1995.
