The freezing temperature of -12.3C was recorded at Loch Glascarnoch, near Garve, south of Ullapool in Wester Ross on Tuesday night.
In the UK, the record lowest temperature is -27.2C, which was recorded in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, in 1895 and 1982 and at Altnaharra in the Highlands in 1995.

Hide AdThe coldest temperature this winter has come amid a cold snap that is affecting most parts of the country.


The Met Office has today issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the country from 3pm this afternoon.
The warning will last until 11.59pm tomorrow, Thursday January 7.
It will remain in place in the north east of Scotland until 12pm on Friday January 8.
