The coin features the words “war” and “peace” intertwined on its face, along with the year the war came to an end - 1945.

Inspired by war memorials

The limited edition £5 coin has been produced by the Royal Mint and Imperial War Museum in honour of the historic day.

The lettering design on its face, which sees the words “war” and “peace” intersect, was inspired by stone inscriptions on war memorials. The intersection of the words was intended to capture the sense of the conflict abating and bringing about the dawn of a new era.

In addition, the coin also bears the inscription “through courage and endurance” around the edge, and makes for a fitting keepsake which marks one of the most significant events in living memory.

Clare Maclennan, of the Royal Mint, said: "This commemorative coin not only preserves the legacy of this historical moment for future generations, but also commemorates the sacrifices made around the world to restore peace."

Where can I get one?

The commemorative coin is available as a limited edition gold proof, silver proof and silver proof piedfort edition, as well as a brilliant uncirculated edition.

The brilliant uncirculated edition is the cheapest available, priced at £13, and is presented in educational packaging that brings the events of the Second World War to life.

The £5 silver proof coin comes in a presentation box, and is priced at £82.50. There are only 2,575 of the coins available.

Both the silver proof piedfort edition and the gold proof coin - priced at £155.00 and £2,640.00 respectively - are both in limited supply. More than 70 per cent of them have already been reserved.
