The earliest reference to Tollcross dates from 1439 with ‘Tolcors’ being the typical early form, with the cors ending continuing in use until the late 18th century. Towcroce and Tolcroce also appeared in the early 16th century.
It is believed that there were no crossroads until modern times and that there is no evidence for such meaning as "toll at a crossroad".
In our look through our archives, we found great photos of stars of the stage at the King’s Theatre, including Stanley Baxter, as well as a visit to a lapdancing club in the area by glamour model Jordan.
There are also great photos of the former legendary department store, Goldbergs, photos from years gone by of pupils at Tollcross Primary, and the firefighters at Tollcross Fire Station.

4. Giving back
The 76-year-old cutting from the Evening News resulted in a generous donation from an ex-pupil in January, 2009, which transformed four classrooms at Tollcross primary school. The modern interactive whiteboards, worth more than £10,000, were gifted to the school by the Evelyn Jamieson Fund. Her brother George Jamieson, 95, visited the school for an official unveiling of the equipment. | TSPL Photo: Iconic Media
