In our latest retro look back at Edinburgh’s communities, we have delved into our photo archives to find these great shots of life in Dalry over the years.
Dalry is now primarily residential, centred around Dalry Road, which has numerous shops, restaurants and small businesses.
Lying outside the old city walls and west of the castle, the area began as part of the agricultural estate of Dalry House (constructed in 1661), the exception being the Dalry Mill, recorded as the oldest paper mill in Scotland, now demolished.
In the Victorian period industrial development followed along with large scale tenement construction, new road layouts and the addition of railway infrastructure, all of which came to occupy the former fields.
By the early 21st century most of the industry of Dalry had disappeared, with a number of historic places, including the old brewery, converted to private housing.
In our photo gallery below we have great photos of people in Dalry having fun at school events, and gala days at Murieston Park.
We also discovered great photos connected to Hearts FC, who of course play along the road at Tynecastle Park in neighbouring Gorgie. Among the Hearts pics are fans celebrating their Scottish Cup win in 2012, and former chairman Wallace Mercer taking on a trolley dash at a Dalry supermarket.
