In our latest retro look at Edinburgh’s communities, we’ve delved into our archives to find 30 great photos showing life in Sighthill over the years.
Situated to the west of the city, between Broomhouse, Parkhead, the Calders and South Gyle, Sighthill is home to Edinburgh College and Napier University campuses, a fire station and a medical centre.
For nearly 50 years, the skyline of western Edinburgh was dominated by four high rise residential tower blocks in northern Sighthill - Broomview House, Glenalmond Court, Hermiston Court and Weir Court. The 11-storey Broomview House was demolished in September 2008, with the three other 16-storey blocks demolished three years later.
Check out our photo gallery below to see some great photos of life in Sighthill over the years. Among them are the time the bomb squad had to rush to the local recycling centre, the opening of the Gate 55 community centre, and a young ‘This is England’ actor in the area for filming.
