Takeaway gives taste of Indian home cooking to Edinburgh – Goan curries & streetfood delivered to the door

Goa is in the Southwest corner of India, famous for its stunning beaches but also for its temples, its rich heritage, and its food.
Renowned for its fish and vegetable dishes, it’s a winner for pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans. Its use of coconut, cashews and subtle blends of spices mean it can be mild with a hint of sourness from tamarind or kokum or sweetness from added jaggery (sugar).
Its historical links with Portugal (for 450 years it was part of the Portuguese empire) left a number of legacies – including some positive culinary treats. Did you know Vindaloo – the hottest of hot curries – comes from the Portuguese words alho for garlic and vinho for wine, reflecting a Portuguese sailors’ pork dish which included a rich sauce made with garlic and wine. At Go Goa in Edinburgh they use toddy vinegar instead of wine.
It’s no surprise then that there are many Christians in Goa and the food can be divided into Goan Catholic and Goan Hindu dishes.

Go Goa is an Edinburgh takeaway which for two years has been offering a host of Goan curries and snacks alongside some glorious dishes and streetfood from around this huge continent. And many of the ingredients come straight from the sub-continent.
With starters like Mumbai samosa chat (a tasty veg samosa), a Miramar Sev papdi chat (spicy aloo tikka with a mint and sour tamarind yoghurt sauce) and curries including Chicken Cafreal (for that Portugese/Goan fusion, Panjim green curry and salcete Masala, and kolhapuri curries for a blast of hot chilli your mouth will definitely be watering.
There is also Hindu style eggplant masala, mapusa xacuti, salcette masala, goan chonyacho ross, margao veg caldin, village dal fry (all Goan veg curries are vegan).
Some extra ingredients are ordered in directly from Goa, like Goan toddy vinegar, dry red chillies, spices, kokum, for the traditional flavour.
Top reviews
Reviewer Carl Fernandes wrote on Google: “Chef Roy prepares every dish with a tremendous dedication to his craft. The food is authentic and every bite and morsel will transport you to Goa, the land of beautiful beaches, zesty spices and peppy and hospitable people. I’d recommend my favourites: The Mapusa Xacuti in Lamb, with Goan Salad, and steamed rice, the Goan Chicken Biriyani (accompanied with yogurt raita) is to die for!! The Aubergine Masala is lip smacking-ly good with its sweet and sour notes. And the (chickpea curry with coconut and roasted spices) called Chonyacho Roas, is another beautifully prepared vegetarian option. These spices have been roasted to perfection to bring out their rich and vibrant flavours, thanks to chef Roy and his team, who painstakingly put in the effort to create these culinary delights!! Bravo!!!”

Quality chefs
The chef behind Go Goa is Roy, who along with Valentia[HT1] , works with local food producers and farmers to source seasonal ingredients.
Roy and Valentia were born in one of Goa’s largest cities, Vasco Da Gama. He has worked as a chef for 20 years in his home country, in Dubai, the US and on cruise ships.
Our goal is to make unique food that tastes like home – our home – and share with our customers the true taste of Goan food alongside other traditional Indian classics
He has fond memories of the aromas which came from his mother’s kitchen, which began his interest in cooking. A cookbook in a neighbours’ kitchen whetted his appetite even more while Valentia too has a love of cooking and food and recalls festival days when she was a teenager when all kinds of Goan feasts were prepared.
And if a customer has been to Goa and want a specific dish which is not on the menu, the team will be happy to make it for them.
What you think
With plenty of five star reviews (overall 4.8) here’s what some of the customers said on Google
“Highly recommended. The best Indian food takeaway we have ever had. Meat in chicken and lamb dishes were moist and beautifully cooked and all the dishes had distinct and delicious flavours.”
“Our go to place from now.”
“The portions were so generous with each dish having a completely distinct flavour. Couldn’t recommend Go Goa highly enough.”
“Best ever food in the UK. Nothing can come close to their flavours.”
One of the best Indian/Goan cuisines in the whole of UK, hats off to Chef Roy.
The Lamb Xacuti was to die for while the Chicken Salcete is an excellent blend of spices and something to devour. The Chicken Machurian was made in the traditional Goan style and the Chicken 65 was crispy and juicy. It was a wonderful experience ordering food from here.
This is must try if visiting Edinburgh.
