Basketball: Blaze make play-offs as Kings presented with title

Boroughmuir BLAZE achieved their end-of-season target when they defeated Glasgow University 72-58 in their final Scottish Basketball League regulation game at the Crags Sports Centre on Saturday.

But, instead of moving two places up the table as they expected, they climbed only one place above Glasgow Storm and finished seventh overall.

Sixth-place went to Stirling Knights who took advantage of an under-strength Troon Tornadoes to win their last game 79-75 at the Peak Sports Centre, a result which delighted Troon coach Tom Campbell as, guaranteed fourth spot, he brought only five players.

Blaze led all the way in their game with the students, who were already sure of fifth place and the Capital outfit can now look forward to challenging Troon in the play-offs.

Adam Johnstone led the Blaze scoring with 20 points, Ben Warrington and Tomas Cicenas added ten each and Chopper Pettett nine.

Glasgow Storm went down 92-58 to Falkirk Fury in their final game at Scotstoun yesterday to finish eighth which means they will face Edinburgh Kings in the first round of the play-offs.

Still without Lee Reilly and Edgars Rekis, Kings completed their fixtures with a 103-43 rout of bottom-of-the-table Dunfermline Reign at Portobello and were afterwards presented with the Scottish League trophy for the sixth year in a row.

“It was a great way to finish the regular season and everyone got some decent court time,” said coach Doug Reilly.

Fife players were in double figures with Simon Flockhart top with 20, Niall Mackle adding a season high of 19, Craig Reilly 17, Paddy Campbell 15, Steven Dickson, another season high of 13, and Matt Wilcox eight.

Falkirk finished second in the table just one point behind, with St Mirren third.

Despite going down 60-48 to St Mirren in their final regular season game at Wester Hailes yesterday, Polonia Phoenix have finished second to Saints in the National junior women’s league one place above and one win better than Edinburgh Kool Kats, who lost their final game away to Tayside Musketeers 64-61 at Arbroath on Saturday.
