Basketball: Flockhart bags 31 points as Kings sweep aside students

There was certainly no danger of any Scottish basketball Cup giant-killing by this season’s Glasgow University side.

The students were swept aside 79-46 on their home court on Saturday by holders Edinburgh Kings, who according to coach Doug Reilly, “played well against a young fit side”.

After the first quarter, Kings led 22-7, an advantage they stretched to 42-22 by half-time and 67-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Centre Simon Flockhart led the Kings with a strong performance at both ends of the court, piling up a season’s high of 31 points and taking 11 rebounds for a “double double” while guard Lee Reilly and forward Ed Rekis both had “double doubles”, Reilly scoring 18 points and adding another impressive ten assists and Rekis 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Former Kings junior Calum Nicol with 13 points was the only student in double figures.

Stirling Knights also reached the second round with a 77-61 home win over the Glasgow Rocks, but the big surprise was the 84-55 Aberdeen University home win over an understrength Glasgow Storm.

In the Scottish Chairman’s Cup, meanwhile, Pleasance Pantheons pipped Pentland Tigers 54-47 in a Lothian derby.

Edinburgh Kool Kats senior women were the only Capital side in action at home, beating Falkirk Fury 67-35 in the league at Portobello.

Glasgow Rocks won 78-58 against the same St Mirren side who pushed Kats so close at Portobello the previous week.
