Boroughmuir Blaze indiscipline allows Fury to triumph

SCOTTISH Basketball League leaders Falkirk Fury snuffed out the challenge of a possibly over-heated Boroughmuir Blaze to defeat the champions 77-61 on their home court at the Crags Sports Centre.

The final score might have been closer had Blaze captain and normally high-scoring point guard Eoghann Dover not picked up two technical fouls for contesting decisions which saw him ejected from the hall in the final quarter.

“I don’t think we were ready for the physicality that Falkirk put into the game and it seemed they wanted it a bit more. When we upped our intensity we struggled to manage our emotions,” admitted Sam Stott, the young Blaze guard.

Coach Simon Turner added: “Fury fully deserved to win, they were better prepared and outplayed us. We’ve work to do to reach our potential.”

After a turgid first quarter Fury led 12-10 and went on to stretch their lead to 35-27 at half-time.

Blaze narrowed the gap to three in the third quarter but three-pointers from Eddy Leginus (two), Adam Hammerschmidt and Keith Bunyan helped stretch the gap to 17. Ross Gibson scored 16 points for the visitors.

If the first quarter was bad at the Crags most of the EU v Glasgow University game at the Pleasance the following day was dire.

EU lost three of the four quarters, 6-9, 8-9, 11-12, but scraped home 44-42 over their spirited but winless rivals, thanks to their 19-10 opening quarter and a strong finish from 6ft 8in centre Laurits Juffers, who top-scored with 15. Chris De Souza registered 13 for GU.

Edinburgh Kings maintained their steady progress by seeing off Dunfermline Reign 77-66 at Holy Rood High and are looking forward to hosting Blaze in an intriguing derby at the new Portobello High games hall a week today.
