Bowls: East Lothian titles up for grabs on finals night
East Lothian IBC stage a host of championship finals at the Alex Marshall Arena tonight featuring Mark Johnston and Dougie Berwick going head-to-head for the Gents Singles title.
Both players have previously captured the crown that brings entry into the following season’s Scottish Championship with Johnston following up his 2001 triumph by adding the national title in 2002.
Johnston also reigned as the East Lothian champion in 2010 while Berwick came out on top in 2012.
In the Under-25 Junior Singles, Ewan Fallen takes on EL’s ‘adopted Welshman’ Joe Mower.
Fallen is on a high as the recently-crowned winner of the national singles title but faces a player who recently claimed the world title.
The honours board at East Lothian is certain to display a new name as the club’s Ladies Junior Singles Champion with Beth Riva and Kim Hoggan battling it out to be a first-time winner of the title.
BJ Smith is bidding to win the Seniors Singles title, however, the form book suggests he will have his work cut out against stalwart Premier League figure Lessel Middler.
Additional singles action features Rosemary Mackintosh against Alison Barclay with the Ladies Seniors title as the prize at stake, while budding teenage stars Dean Riva and Lewis Betts are sure to entertain in their bid to reign as Youth champion.
Meanwhile, the destination of the popular Top Club Tournament, sponsored by East Coast Carpets, has already been decided with Willie Wood MBE and Co nailing down the title with a commanding 15-shot win over defending champions Tranent in the final.
• A major upset in the final of the 4-Bowl Pairs at Midlothian IBC saw favourites Billy and David Peacock crushed 23-13 by Neil Melrose and Jim Cullen Jnr.
