Boxing: John McCallum wins his comeback fight

Super middleweight boxer John McCallum is back with a bang after a points victory over Lincoln's Mitch Mitchell at the Paisley Lagoon Centre on Saturday night.

The Edinburgh fighter suffered his first professional defeat in October when a cut to his right eye forced him to retire against Leon McKenzie in the sixth round.

McCallum, now working under new coach Stevie McGuire, dominated from the first bell against Mitchell.

“It feels good to be back,” he said. “I felt strong and believe I made a statement. Mitchell was a big guy but a dirty fighter. He headbutted me in the last round as he got desperate for the win as he knew he was losing badly. My support was tremendous and you would have thought we were at Meadowbank.”

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Craig McEwan, who could only draw with Sam Omidi at Ravenscraig.

The 33-year-old super middleweight revealed he had to lose eight pounds prior to his four-round bout due to a confusion over the weigh in.

“I was supposed to weigh in on Thursday and then got told it was on the day of the fight so I had to lose a lot overnight,” McEwan explained. “After the second round I had nothing in me, nothing to give so I’m glad it was only four rounds. Everything just went wrong.”
