Boxing: Alex Brown sure Bronx have steel to win

WITH no less than eight Bronx club boxers seeking Scottish junior boxing title glory at the Ravenscraig Arena this weekend, the Tranent-based outfit are truly spearheading the Eastern challenge at the Motherwell venue.

And club coach Alex Brown is confidently predicting his boxers will bring at least four Scottish Junior crowns back along the M8 from the show, which runs tomorrow and Sunday.

He said: “Firstly, there’s my light-flyweight Nathan Shaw who already has won Scottish Novice, Intermediate and Eastern District 42kg titles this season. I fancy Nathan to win against the other guys in his weight class.

“Also, Cameron McBeth, Ewan Wilkie and Port Seaton’s Harvey Cunningham are all in with a real shout of grabbing titles too this weekend.

“And let’s not forget my 1999 age group flyweight Reece Hoehle. However, I’ve also got big hopes for my hard-hitting middleweight Patrick Logan and 12-year-old Jack Murray at 44kg.” Meanwhile, after suffering the blow of losing his favourite to win a title – Tommy McCallum – due to injury, Lochend club coach Terry McCormack is confident that he can turn the championship tables for former Midlothian featherweight Scott Brown.

McCormack said: “Three years ago, I coached Liam Tervip to beat Brown in the final of these same championships – now I aim to help Brown to win the 57kg title this time around.”

And Meadowbank coach Mark Geraghty admits that his light-flyweight Matt McHale faces a tough task against Doon Valley’s David Burrell in a traight 46kg final bout.

Geraghty said: “McHale and Burrell have beaten each other once previously, but since then, Burrell has become the British champion, so it’s going to be tough for McHale, but Matt knows just what to expect.”

Other East boxers competing are Midlothian pair John Redpath and Bernard McLaughlin, Chirnside duo Lewis Noon and Robiie White, plus East Lothian’s Matt Cunningham.

Boxing begins at 1pm on both days and daily admission costs £12 adults and £8 concessions.
