Boxing: Khosrowpour left with sour taste after win

Khosrowpour was ahead on points at Meadowbank when Leith Victoria boxer Brown was excluded in the third and final round after ignoring an earlier referee’s warning for the same rules infringement.

Khosrowpour, who had beaten Larkfield’s Andrew Burke 17-5 in the semi-finals, said: “I was beating Brown on points anyway and would have won, but I was sorry he ignored the referee’s caution not to badmouth me during the bout. It was a bit anti-climatic as I would have rather have won by a clear decision, although the referee was only doing his job.’’

Brown’s Leith Victoria coach Mark Skinner said: “Connor’s actions were heat-of-the- moment stuff. He now acknowledges that he lost the plot a bit after the referee cautioned him for a low blow and talking repeatedly to his opponent. He’s genuinely sorry about the whole incident.’’

Another Clovenstone winner was welterweight Mark Brown, who beat fellow Capital boxer Craig Neilson, of the Holyrood club, by a wafer-thin 13-12.

Sparta featherweight Mike Wood lost on a judges’ computer countback with the points score tied at 9-9 in his final with Barrhead’s Phil Watson.

However, Sparta lightweight Calum Vardy collected the 60kg Junior Novice title with an emphatic 21-1 points win over Larkhall’s Lee Douglas.

In the heavier weights, two Holyrood club boxers excelled by winning titles in thoroughly convincing fashion. At heavyweight, David Smyllie stopped Hillpark’s Scott Edgar in the third round, while Holyrood super-heavyweight Daniel Gollan beat Alloa rival David Theus by a 31-17 points margin.

At junior level, Holyrood light- flyweight Ryan Love was crowned champion after outscoring Kelvin’s Tom Clarke 6-2.

East Lothian youths, light-flyweight Mark Cunningham and lightweight Martin Buist, also became champions on points.
