Boxing: Plenty of action in city

The large ringside crowd who turned out in force at the Capital’s Usher Hall for ABS promoter Bradley Welsh’s inaugural promotion at the city venue were rewarded with some cracking ring contests as the Edinburgh Varsities amateur boxing squad triumphed over an Ednburgh club select by seven bouts to five.

No Varsity boxer was more outstanding than Edinburgh Uni southpaw welterweight, Renwick McAuslan who dropped his opponent Neil Kennedy in round three with crashing right hooks en route to posting a unanimous points win. It put his team 3-0 ahead.

However, the student sockers didn’t monopolise the glory as 18-year-old Merchiston Castle sixth former and Lochend club lightweight Tom McPherson jabbed and hooked his way to a second-round stoppage win over Edinburgh Uni’s Robert Craig.

Then Edinburgh team light-welterweight Tony McLean from the Bronx club produced all the ring poetry against Varsity rival Johnny Tennyson to help make the final result more respectable.
