Boxing: Yeleussinov ends Taylor’s medal hopes

Lochend light-welterweight Josh Taylor crashed out of the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, after losing 11-5 to Asian Games gold medallist Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan.

Top Scottish international referee and ringside judge Andy Caulfield – who was at ringside for the clash – paid tribute to Commonwealth Games silver medallist Taylor after his performance.

“Josh had a storming third round but the Kazakh boxer held on from being ahead 7-3 going into the last round and won 11-5 .

“But it was a commendable and gutsy performance by Taylor against a really top world-class opponent.’’

Taylor has said that he is determined to bounce back after a three-week break and will be in tip-top condition in time for the Lochend club’s show in the Capital’s Corn Exchange on October 21.

Meanwhile, promoter Alex Arthur has announced that his next professional boxing show at Meadowbank will take place on December 17 – although no details of who will fight on the bill are yet to hand.

Before then, Meadowbank will host the Scottish Amateur boxing national Novice Championships on October 22-23 and October 30.
