Josh Taylor vows not to underestimate Apinun Khongsong

Thai fighter will be given the respect he deserves by a fully-focused Taylor

Josh Taylor says he cannot afford to underestimate undefeated Apinun Khongsong despite being strongly tipped to retain his WBA and IBF crowns.

The World Boxing Super Series winner will put his belts on the line against the Thai fighter at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on Saturday, May 2.

Undefeated Khongsong, six years Taylor’s junior, has registered 13 knockouts from 16 professional contests.

However, the 23-year-old has only fought outwith his native country once and will make the long journey to Scotland as the underdog.

But Taylor, now training with Ben Davison, isn’t one for cutting corners and will prepare for a hard 12 rounds.

“On paper it looks like it should be an easy night’s work,” he said. “But you can’t judge a book by its cover. I’ve got to keep my focus and give him respect. He’s 16-0 with 13 knock-outs so he obviously carries a bit power. He looks tall for the weight so it’s hard to judge him.

“I’m going to have to watch what I’m doing because if I don’t get past him then it shatters all my dreams and ambitions.”
