McEwan is no Brooklyn dodger . .

Nobody can accuse Edinburgh middleweight boxer Craig McEwan of selecting patsies as ring opponents as he tries to claw his way back up the American championship ratings after losing for the first time in a Stateside ring to Irishman Andy Lee last March.

McEwan, now based back in the Capital, will make the long haul to Mexico for a November 5 clash with big-punching Peter Quillin of Brooklyn, New York. And it is a mark of McEwan’s self-belief that he is keen to go head-to-head with Quillin despite the unbeaten Cuban-American boasting a 20-knockouts-in-25 fights record.

“This will be a really tough fight for me as it is only my second fight in 16 months but I am determined to put on a great show,’’ said McEwan.

“The fight is being televised by HBO and I am looking to make a big impression after my loss to Andy Lee.

“I have been lucky to get some sponsorship from Apex Roofing and Stenhouse Motors recently which has been a big help during a long lay-off.

“However, I’m glad that my sponsors will now get some international coverage.’’
